  NOTES FOR CONTESTANTS

This is one of the very few opportunities which young musicians get to perform under “concert” conditions in public, and is invaluable experience.

The adjudicators do not listen with a netgative attitude or deliberately to find fault, but to offer encouragement and are hoping for themselves and the audience to be entertained.

These are a few things that they hope that the contestants will bring to the competition:-

  • They are fully familiar with the music they are performing.
  • Sufficient practice has been done and they are confident in playing the music.
  • They appreciate the style of the music they are playing, ie Scherzo, Tarantella or Waltz.
  • They are encouraged to listen to what they are playing.
  • They try to communicate their music to the audience.
  • They are expected to exit graciously after their performance – a bow to the audience to acknowledge their applause and one to thank any accompanist, and even one to the adjudicators does not go amiss.

The adjudicators are aware of the pressures and nervousness that can descend (sometimes without warning) on the entrants, and do their best to put all performers at their ease – they were all young once!
