  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 

GENERAL

Q WHAT ARE THE GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES?

A Hart District and all adjacent Districts

Q DO I HAVE TO LIVE WITHIN THE GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES?

A No, you can enter if you go to school within the boundaries, or if
your music teacher lives within the boundaries.

Q ARE THERE AGE LIMITS FOR ENTRANTS?

A There is no minimum age limit. The upper age the limit is 19, ie
entrants must not be over 19 years of age on March 5th 2011.


Q WHAT INSTRUMENTS ARE INCLUDED?

A Strings / Woodwind / Brass / Piano. There is no Vocal category, nor for Percussion (due to time constraints).

Q HOW MANY STAGES ARE THERE?

A There are two stages - Heats held on March 5th 2011
& Finals held on March 26th 2011.

HEATS

Q HOW ARE THE HEATS ORGANISED?

A Entrants are divided into three groups:
Junior for entrants up to and including 11 yrs
Intermediate for entrants from 12 to 15 years at 31/1/2011
Senior for entrants from 16 to 19 years

Each group has separate categories for Strings, Woodwind, Brass &
Piano.

Q WHAT PIECES WILL I BE REQUIRED TO PLAY?

A Juniors - Two contrasting pieces totalling a maximum of 5 mins only
Intermediate - Two contrasting pieces totalling a maximum of 7 mins only
Seniors - Two contrasting pieces totalling a maximum of 9 mins only

(two contrasting movements from the same piece are acceptable)

Q WHAT IF I EXCEED THE PERMITTED TIME?

A Overrunning will be penalised by the adjudicators.


Q WHO ARRANGES ACCOMPANISTS?

A Entrants should make their own arrangements. Backing tapes are permitted but permission must be sought in advance from the organisers.

Q CAN I ENTER IN MORE THAN ONE INSTRUMENT CATEGORY?

A Yes. There is a £5 entry fee for each instrument category you
choose to enter.

Q DO I HAVE TO BE TAKING GRADES TO ENTER?

A No.

Q WHY DO YOU ASK FOR GRADE INFORMATION ON THE ENTRY FORM?

A This information is used in scheduling the Heats to ensure that, as
far as possible, entrants will find themselves playing with others of
broadly the same standard.

Q WHERE DO THE HEATS TAKE PLACE?

A In schools in Fleet and Hartley Wintney. Entrants will receive full
details after sending in their completed application forms.


Q WHO DECIDES WHO GOES ON TO THE FINALS?

A The adjudicators - all members of the Worshipful Company of
Musicians experienced in adjudicating young people.

Q WHO GOES THROUGH TO THE FINALS?

A Up to two from each group, provided that the adjudicators consider
them to be up to the standard they expect for Finalists.

Q HOW WILL I KNOW HOW I GOT ON IN THE HEATS?

A If you provide an email address on your entry form we will tell you if
you are being invited to the Finals by email on Monday March 7th.
If not we will send you the result by post during that week. You will
also receive your adjudicator’s report that week. Those going on to
the Finals will also receive details of the Finals arrangements.

FINALS

Q WHERE ARE THE FINALS HELD?

A At the Church on the Heath on Elvetham Heath.

Q HOW DO I GET THERE BY CAR?

A A map and directions can be found on this website.

Q HOW WILL I KNOW WHERE AND WHEN TO TURN UP?

A You will receive full details by letter after the Heats.

Q WILL THERE BE REHEARSAL ROOMS AVAILABLE?

A No, only facilities for warming up instruments.

Q WHO WILL BE ADJUDICATING AT THE FINALS?

A Members of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

Q APART FROM ENTRANTS WHO CAN ATTEND THE FINALS?

A The Finals are open to the public. Admission is by ticket purchased
in advance or by payment at the door. Families and friends of all
who participated in the Heats are particularly welcome.
Refreshments are included in the ticket price.

Q IS PHOTOGRAPHY PERMITTED?

A To avoid disturbance to the performers photography is not permitted
while the competition is in progress. There will be an opportunity to
take photographs during the prize giving ceremony.

Q CAN PHOTOGRAPHS OF PRIZE WINNERS BE PURCHASED?

A There will be an opportunity to purchase official photographs of prize
winners receiving their awards.


CUPS & PRIZES

Q WHAT ARE THE MAIN PRIZES?

A The Hart Young Musician of the Year Trophy plus £500 cash
The Philip Jones Memorial Cup for Brass

Q ARE THERE OTHER PRIZES?

A Yes - Medals are awarded to winners in each class.

Q ARE THERE ANY CERTIFICATES?

A Yes - Certificates are awarded to the runners-up in each class.

Q CAN PRIZE WINNERS ENTER AGAIN IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS?

A Prize winners in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections may re-enter in subsequent years. The overall competition winner, however, may not re-enter, but as "Hart Young Musician of the Year" is invited to give a guest performance at the Finals of the following year's competition.
